When a fire started a San Juan Pools in Lakeland this morning, the sprinklers were useless because the city had cut off the water to repair a broken water main nearby.
The fire caused an estimated $3 million in damage and forced the evacuation of an industrial park near the intersection of Reynolds Road and Maine Avenue.
County firefighters were still containing the plant fire at 2302 Lasso Lane late this afternoon.
A plume of smoke rising as high as 2,000 feet and drifting southwest can be seen for miles around after the fire started around 9 a.m.
City utilities officials had notified area residents of the water main work in advance. The absence of water meant firefighters had to use hydrants three-quarters of a mile away.
The roof collapsed and several walls fell in, according to a WFLA-TV reporter who viewed the scene from a helicopter.
Multiple fire units responded to the blaze, and a hazardous materials rescue team was standing by. No injuries were reported.
