Polk County Firefighters handle multi-fatal accident on Highway 60

Polk County Firefighters were busy again with yet another multiple fatality vehicle accident on Highway 60. The accident was East of Lake Wales, near Boyscout Road in Station 10's first due area. The accident began when a tractor trailor failed to stop for traffic that was backed up by road construction. The semi rear-ended a vehicle and began a 7 vehicle chain reaction crash that took the lives of two persons from one of the vehicles. Another patient was ejected from their vehicle and still another was entrapped. Crews from Engine 10, Engine 14, ALS 6, and ALS 23 worked the scene under the direction of Battalion Chief Vernon Austin (Batt. 2). After all the patients were treated and transported, fire crews spent an additional 2 hours on scene extrication.
